Summer and the City Summer is a magical bushndll in New York City and Carrie is in love with all of it—the crazy characters in her neighborhood, the vintage-clothing boutiques, the wild parties, and the glamorous man who has swept her off her feet.
What women can’t do that men can. Sex and the Citypublished inwas the basis for the HBO hit series and two subsequent blockbuster movies. The thirst for power, for social prominence, and for marriages that are successful—at least to the public eye.
Being a strong women isn’t as easy as everyone assumes. This sharply observant, keenly funny comedy of manners is Bushnell at her most sassy and entertaining. Of course, it helps that I’ve worked in magazine publishing and have had my share of experience with Hollywood.
One consequence of this gender reversal is that the juungle misandry which underlies most of Bushnell’s work and indeed most chick-lit takes on a more sinister tone. When it becomes clear that a competitor is trying to oust her, something has to give–and Wendy must decide between her career and her marriage. Set up a giveaway. Everything felt scattered, from an all over the place time line to almost interchangeable, and therefore easily confusable, main characters.
